SEDTC Researcher named Postgraduate Researcher of the Year

Monday 15 August 2016

We are delighted to announce that James McQuilken, a Surrey SEDTC Management Researcher has been named Postgraduate Researcher of the Year at the University of Surrey.

James is an ESRC-funded doctoral candidate within Surrey Business School who has established himself as one of the leading authorities on small-scale mining in sub-Saharan Africa. Over a three-year period, James has co-published three research papers in respected journals and has presented papers at conferences in the UK and internationally. His research has had considerable influence on policy and his work with the London-based NGO the International Institute for Environment and Development on the formalisation of Ghana’s small-scale mining sector has helped to successfully engage Ghanian policymakers, international donors, researchers and NGO officials.  James recently organised a very successful SEDTC interdisciplinary event entitled People, Power & Politics: What is needed to harness the extractive industries for development in sub-Saharan Africa?

We would like to congratulate James on his achievement.
